2007 Services Provided Highlights

Unfortunately, hunger and poverty issues for families and individuals remain in our society. Even in the midst of the growing economic development in the Charlotte area, people are not getting enough to eat. Particularly, the homeless and low-income families and children are greatly impacted. Affordable housing and limited job skills are also areas where many in this population lack opportunity.

At the Harvest Center, we addressed the hunger issues by providing hot meals and groceries to thousands of people. We served over 58,000 hot meals in 2007. This represented a 69.7% increase over 2005. We also provided groceries to over 14,800 families. This increased by 111% over 2005.

We provided job skills educational opportunities to eight unemployed individuals in 2007. Seven of the eight individuals completed their courses in the areas of office, computer, and customer service training; and heating and air conditioning equipment maintenance at Central Piedmont Community College. Six of the individuals are now employed, and the other one is interviewing.

We increased the living quarters for homeless individuals in our transitional housing program by renovating and rearranging available space to accommodate six additional persons.

We also provided new and gently used clothing and blankets, free haircuts, medical testing, and volunteer hours to families and individuals.
